Students Protest Over Hike In Petrol And Electricity Tariff

Students have staged a peaceful protest over a hike in petrol and electricity tariffs.

News Rain gathered that the increment in the price of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), which is also known as petrol, and electricity has led to a peaceful protest by some students, concerned civil groups, and some aggrieved residents in Ibadan on Tuesday.

The protester who gathered to showed their grievances in a very peaceful manner, through a peaceful protest, had called on the Federal Government to reverse it’s a decision on the issue before the matter goes out of hand.

The protester was sighted with different placards with various inscriptions, were seen chanting and singing in anti-government tone.

The protest which was staged purposely to condemned the action of the federal government on what they described as the incessant Increment in the price of petrol and other essential commodities in the country, their demonstration affected both human and vehicular movements at Awolowo Road Junction, along with the popular Bodija Market in Ibadan.

Addressing journalist during the protest is the Chairman of Joint Campus Committee of the National Association of Nigeria Students, Comrade Mayowa Opakunle, who noted that the decisions depicted the Federal Government as insensitive to the plights of the citizens.

He said  “We are on the streets to register our grievances and show our displeasure against the wicked policies and unjust treatment of Nigerians by the Federal Government.

“We say no to fuel price hike and electricity tariff increment at this period when many people have lost their jobs and many have not been paid for the past six months.

“Prices of food and other goods and services have continued to increase while salaries are either being slashed into half while many do not even get paid at all.

Also in his brief contribution, the former Chairman, Trade Union Congress in the State, Mr. Andrew Emelieze, lamented that the hike would further impoverish the masses, and urged the Federal Government to reverse it’s a decision on the issue.
