Didier Drogba is set to receive the UEFA President’s Award.
News Rain learned that former Cote d’Ivoire football captain is to receive the Award for being a “leader and pioneer”.
According to the UEFA President, Aleksander Ceferin, the European football governing body is also giving the award to the 42-year-old former footballer for his “commitment to excellence on and off the pitch”.
He said: “Didier is a hero to millions of football fans for his achievements throughout his glittering playing career”.
“I will remember him as a player for his skill, strength, and intelligence, but above all, for his insatiable appetite to succeed, a trait which is just as present in his desire to help others off the field of play.”
The former Chelsea star will be honoured on Thursday in Switzerland at the draw for the group phase of the 2020/2021 UEFA Champions League.
UEFA said the award recognizes “outstanding achievements, professional excellence, and exemplary personal qualities”.
It has been previously won by Bobby Charlton, Eusebio, Raymond Kopa, Johan Cruyff, Francesco Totti, David Beckham, and Eric Cantona.
Recall that Drogba is an all-time top scorer and former captain of the Cote d’Ivoire national team. He is best known for his career at Chelsea, for whom he has scored more goals than any other foreign player and is currently the club’s fourth highest goal scorer of all time.
Widely regarded as one of Chelsea’s greatest players, he was named in the Chelsea team of the 2010–2020 decade by Chelsea’s fans. Drogba won several titles with Chelsea, including the 2012 UEFA Champions League when he scored against Bayern Munich in the final match, which was eventually settled on penalty kicks.
He also represented his country at the FIFA World Cup and has a foundation that provides educational opportunities for children. He was named African Footballer Of The Year twice, winning the accolade in 2006 and 2009
