The UNICAL ASUU Chairman said: ” We can’t give you full details of what briefings transpired in Congress, because it is a process that we will collate and analyse at NEC in Abuja on Thursday.
“But it is a process arising from the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila to see if there can be an amicable and “Speedy” resolution.
“Some understanding have been reached, some shifting of grounds have been made, so we need to process these at the various organs of the Union and the final resolutions will be taken at NEC when we meet on Thursday,” he said.
The embattled Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has fixed a meeting of its National Executive Council for Thursday to consider the planned call-off of the nine-month-old strike by lecturers in federal universities across the country.
As a prelude to the NEC meeting, ASUU branches would commence the traditional voting today to take a position over the ongoing strike by the union.
But the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, has said the association has not formally suspended its eight month old industrial action but would arrive at a decision after following due process.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the House of Representatives, on Monday, met on the lingering industrial action by the lecturers.
The lecturers led by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke and the leadership of the House, led by Femi Gbajabiamila, met behind a closed-door for about 30 minutes before having another one in front of the camera.

The Federal Government has threatened to sue the striking lecturers, who are members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities if they fail to resume as ruled by the National Industrial Court.
The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, who issued this threat on Friday during an interview monitored on Channel TV, disclosed that he had directed labour controllers to monitor compliance at all tertiary institutions across the states.
He said, “The court says ASUU must obey today (Friday). I have asked labour controllers in the 36 states and the zones to reach out to the universities; number one, to see if the vice chancellors have opened the gates because that is one of the imports of the judgment of the Industrial Court.
“You must open the gates, you must open the class rooms and to see whether those workers, those teachers reported today, tomorrow Friday and Saturday. My labour controllers will write me a report.
“The Education Ministry through the NUC will also do their bit and we will compare it. By Tuesday, if they have complied with this, first, they will have the right to appeal as the court says.
“If they come back to their classroom, they will have time to attach evidence and do their appeal. My labour controllers will also give me things to support education in the country. If they don’t, go and read that portion of the NICN Act, they will be charged for contempt,” he said.
The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Friday, ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its strike.
The court gave the order after dismissing the union’s application for a stay of execution of an earlier ruling of the National Industrial Court directing the university lecturers to resume work.
The three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Hamma Barka granted the union permission to appeal the ruling of the industrial court but ruled that it must first resume work to be allowed to file the appeal.
It said should ASUU fail to re-open the universities, the permission it gave the union to appeal against the interlocutory injunction of the National Industrial Court “will be automatically vacated.”
It gave the university lecturers’ union seven days within which to file its notice of appeal against the order of the National Industrial Court.
“I am inclined to granting the application to appeal the decision of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria. But the order of the lower court shall be immediately obeyed,” the court held in its unanimous ruling.

House of Representatives has continued in its efforts to end the crisis between the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government on Thursday met with the two parties.

Recall that the Federal Government had earlier ordered Vice-Chancellors to re-open schools.
It had asked the Vice-Chancellors of universities “to ensure that the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) resume and commence lectures immediately.”
However, it later issued another directive withdrawing its earlier circular.
The opinion leaders and other stakeholders interested in resolving the face-off between the ASUU and the government mounted pressure on government requesting that the circular, earlier sent to mandate the reopening of the universities, be withdrawn.
A senior official in the Ministry of Education, who didn’t want his name mentioned, disclosed that “the circular was withdrawn to allow for more negotiation between the government and the ASUU following the ongoing invention by the Speaker of the House of Representatives”.

Federal Government through the National Universities Commission has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open schools and allow students to resume lectures with immediate effect.
This was made known in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
The letter which was made exclusively available to NewsOnline Nigeria on Monday was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.
“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.

The Federal Ministry of Education on Monday claimed that the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) has hindered the payment of bursary to students of education in universities.
The permanent secretary of the ministry, Andrew Adejo, made this known during the 2022 World Teachers Day press briefing held in Abuja.
Recall that President Buhari had 2021 promised to release bursaries to students studying education in universities and colleges of education.
“Undergraduates of B.Ed/B.A. Ed/BSc. Ed in Public institutions are to receive stipends of N75,000.00 per semester while NCE students will get N50,000.00 as stipends per semester.
“Federal Government should find the modality through which respective states’ governments could provide automatic employment for NCE graduates at Basic Education level,” Buhari had said through his minister of education, Adamu Adamu.
Speaking to the press, Adejo said, “The implementation of the payment of stipends has commenced.
However, due to the strike, we have not been able to get the data of all the students in universities. We only have 7 per cent of the required data to be processed for payment.”
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, says it will appeal the order by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) asking its members to call off the seven-month-long strike.
The University of Abuja chapter chairman of ASUU, Dr Kasim Umar, stated this while reacting to the order by the court in Abuja.

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called on the Federal Government to resolve, within a few working days, the lingering Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, strike.

The lecturers met with the Professor Nimi Briggs Committee at the National University Commission (NUC) in Abuja with high hopes of resolving the impasse.

ASUU president, Osodeke said the comment of the duo that the Federal government cannot meet their demand and will not borrow to meet their demand showed they are interlopers.
