ASUU latest news on resumption

ASUU suspends eight-month-old strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has suspended its eight-month-old industrial action.

A member of the union’s National Executive Committee, NEC, confirmed this to DAILY POST early Friday.

ASUU decided to suspend the strike during a meeting of its leadership that started on Thursday night and lasted into the early hours of Friday.

The state branches of the union met over the Court of Appeal ruling last week, following which members voted to conditionally suspend the strike.

The Court of Appeal had issued an order to ASUU to suspend the strike before its appeal of the ruling ordering lecturers to resume work could be heard.

The National Executive Committee meeting was attended by chairmen of the state chapters and national executive members at the ASUU National Secretariat in Abuja.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 this year.

ASUU Reach Understanding With FG Over Ongoing ASUU Strike

ASUU has reached an understanding with FG over the ongoing ASUU Strike.

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, University of Calabar, Branch, has disclosed that some understanding has been reached, while some shifting of grounds has been made but only National Executive Council (NEC), will convey the resolutions.

Addressing newsmen shortly after its Congress at the International Conference centre on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, Chairman ASUU, UNICAL, Dr. Edor John also cautioned that the Federal government should focus on tackling the issues bedeviling ASUU adding that there was no need trying to divide them by registering other bodies or Union with a view of breaking their ranks.

The UNICAL ASUU Chairman said: ” We can’t give you full details of what briefings transpired in Congress, because it is a process that we will collate and analyse at NEC in Abuja on Thursday.

“But it is a process arising from the intervention of the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Rt Hon Femi Gbajabiamila to see if there can be an amicable and “Speedy” resolution.

“Some understanding have been reached, some shifting of grounds have been made, so we need to process these at the various organs of the Union and the final resolutions will be taken at NEC when we meet on Thursday,” he said.

ASUU NEC Meets Thursday to Decide Fate of Strike

The embattled Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), has fixed a meeting of its National Executive Council for Thursday to consider the planned call-off of the nine-month-old strike by lecturers in federal universities across the country.

As a prelude to the NEC meeting, ASUU branches would commence the traditional voting today to take a position over the ongoing strike by the union.

But the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, has said the association has not formally suspended its eight month old industrial action but would arrive at a decision after following due process.

Newsone gathered from a reliable source in one of the universities that the decision of the various branches would be transmitted to the NEC for a final decision on the strike, which may likely be called off after Thursday’s meeting.

“We have been invited to a meeting of our local branch on Wednesday to be briefed on the outcome of various negotiations, including the interventions by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila regarding our demands. We are also expected to take a position based on the issues presented and to vote on our next line of action, whether to suspend the strike or to uphold it,” the source said.

Strike: We will sign deal in couple of days – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the House of Representatives, on Monday, met on the lingering industrial action by the lecturers.

The lecturers led by ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke and the leadership of the House, led by Femi Gbajabiamila, met behind a closed-door for about 30 minutes before having another one in front of the camera.

It would be recalled that the House has been hosting meetings between the government and the strike lecturers in the past couple of weeks.

On Friday, the Court of Appeal agreed with an early ruling by the National Industrial Court that asked the Union to resume immediately.

It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had during his budget presentation stated that N470 billion has been allocated for tertiary institutions in the 2023 budget.

Speaking on the outcome of the closed-door meeting, Gbajabiamila said President Muhammadu Buhari will make a major announcement regarding the strike.

Also speaking, the Osodeke, said the Union will sign some documents in the next couple of days which they will take to their members for ratification.
