Lagos Announces Free Ante-natal And Free Child Delivery Services

As part of palliatives to ease the pains of fuel subsidy removal, Lagos State General Hospitals and Primary Health Centres will be providing free antenatal care and child delivery services to expectant mothers.

The free services will also cover cesarean sections.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, who monitored compliance at the Ifako-Ijaiye and Isolo General Hospitals, at the weekend, said the measure would help improve maternal and child health indices.

Ogboye, who expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance, said: “The governor recognised that the cost of ante-natal care and child delivery would add to the burden of expectant parents.

That was why he announced the measure as part of palliatives to ease the burden of fuel subsidy removal.

“I am impressed by the level of compliance at the health facilities visited. Having gone round the ANC clinics, post-delivery wards, and baby nurseries at the Ifako-Ijaiye and Isolo General Hospitals, it is heartwarming to see the smiles on the faces of newly born and their parents.

“I would like to thank the management of these hospitals and the workers for quickly putting in place modalities and carrying out the governor’s directive. This is an indication that all government institutions are in sync.”

The permanent secretary assured the people of the government’s renewed commitment to ensure strategies to reduce and eradicate maternal, child, and infant mortality, as well as the general improvement in all maternal and child health indices.

A beneficiary at the Ifako-Ijaiye General Hospital, Mrs. Oluwademilade Mustapha, who underwent caesarian section, lauded the initiative.

She thanked the team who attended to her and praised the nurses for their excellence, which she said contradicted the opinion she had before coming to the hospital.

“I am satisfied with my experience in this hospital. It is contrary to the rumors I have heard about nurses in government hospitals. Nurses here are friendly, they take good care of patients and all treatments have been free of charge. I thank Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for this opportunity,” she said.

Another beneficiary at the Isolo General Hospital, Mrs. Eniola Samuel, thanked God and the team for saving her despite the complications she encountered during delivery.

” Thank God for life, for using the doctors and nurses in this hospital to save my life. God empowered them to keep me alive despite the complications I encountered during childbirth.

I am also very surprised that up to this moment, I have not paid anything, and I have been told my treatment is free. I really appreciate the Lagos State Government for this great opportunity.”
