Jazz legend Dies At 98

Lou Donaldson, the celebrated alto saxophonist whose career spanned nearly seven decades, has died at 98.

Donaldson passed away on Saturday (Nov. 9) at a hospital in Daytona Beach, Florida, according to a statement on his website.

“The Family of Sweet Poppa Lou Donaldson sadly confirms his death on November 9, 2024. A private service will be held,” the statement read.

“Thank you for supporting Lou and his music throughout his career. Because of you, his legendary contributions to Jazz will live on forever.”

His daughter, E. Carol Webster, told The Washington Post that Donaldson had recently battled pneumonia.

Donaldson was born in Badin, North Carolina. He was a World War II veteran who made his mark on the bebop jazz scene after the war.

Early in his career, he collaborated with legendary artists like Thelonious Monk and Milt Jackson.

He also helped launch the career of Clifford Brown, a brilliant trumpeter whose life was cut short in a car accident in 1956.

Donaldson’s musical reach went far beyond bebop, incorporating soul, blues, and pop elements into his work.

His 1967 rendition of “Ode to Billy Joe,” featuring George Benson on guitar, earned him wider recognition.

Albums such as Alligator Bogaloo, Lou Donaldson at His Best, and Wailing With Lou highlighted his range and creativity, while “Blues Walk,” released in 1958, became a signature piece in his performances.

Donaldson shared the stage with iconic musicians like Horace Silver and George Benson throughout his career.

His influence extended into modern music, with hip-hop artists such as Nas and De La Soul sampling his work, ensuring his contributions reached new audiences across generations.
