Anambra Head Of Service Restates Workers’ Satisfaction With Governor Soludo’s Transformation Efforts

The Anambra State Head of Service, Barr. Theodora Okwy Igwegbe has reaffirmed workers’ satisfaction with Governor Charles Soludo’s ongoing transformation in the state, during this year’s ‘Workers’ Day’ celebration in Awka.

She stated that the theme for the year, “Reclaiming Civic Space Amidst Economic Hardship,” aligns with Governor Soludo’s achievements over the past three years.

Igwegbe stressed key initiatives, including implementing the new Minimum Wage Act and the governor’s economic policies, designed to alleviate the effects of current economic challenges on workers.

She also highlighted the state’s progress in healthcare, the introduction of free antenatal and delivery services for women, and the growing recognition of the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIS) by other states.

While commending the governor for his efforts, Igwegbe acknowledged that there is still room for improvement in workers’ welfare and urged civil servants to maintain timeliness, diligence, and professionalism in their service delivery.

In a show of support, she reassured Governor Soludo that the workers stand with him, as evidenced by the “Workers Beacon of Hope” award presented to him.

Earlier in the event, representatives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Anambra reaffirmed the need to uphold citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and association, especially in times of economic hardship. They also called for the restoration of the Civic Space to ensure that civil servants’ voices are not silenced.

While praising the governor’s efforts, the unions raised concerns about issues such as the creation of a joint committee to safeguard the Contributory Pension Scheme and the domestication of the retirement age policy for teachers, set at 40 years of service or 65 years of age.
