President Bola Tinubu has met with the newly inaugurated head of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, on Sunday, following a solemn inauguration mass held at St. Peter’s Square, Vatican City.
The US pontiff shook hands with several world leaders in St Peter’s Square after the inauguration mass on Sunday.
While shaking hands with the Pope, Tinubu had a brief conversation with him before moving away.
Tinubu joined other world leaders in Rome, Italy, on Sunday for the installation mass marking the beginning of the Pontificate of His Holiness Pope Leo XIV.
At the installation mass, Pope
Leo XIV set the tone for his papacy with a call to stop exploiting nature and marginalising the poor.
“In this our time, we still see too much discord, too many wounds caused by hatred, violence, prejudice, the fear of difference, and an economic paradigm that exploits the Earth’s resources and marginalises the poorest,” he said.
In front of dignitaries, including US Vice President Vance and Ukraine’s leader Volodymyr Zelensky, he gave a homily calling for the Church to be a transformational force in a world of division and hatred.
Other dignitaries who greeted the Pope included U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, among others.
Recall that His Holiness Pope Leo XIV was elected as the Bishop of Rome and spiritual leader of the world’s 1.3 billion Catholics.
