Top Nigerian Newspaper Headlines And Naija News For Thursday 22nd May 2025.

1. Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State on Wednesday accused some military officers and politicians of being informants and collaborators for Boko Haram terrorists. Speaking in an interview on News Central’s Breakfast Central, Zulum vowed to deal ruthlessly with saboteurs, frustrating the efforts of his administration in tackling insurgency in the state.

2. Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir Lawal, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu’s presence in Rome for the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV wasn’t an achievement, saying his presence there reinforced the insult of Muslim-Muslim ticket on the Christian population in the country.

3. The former Vice Chairman of the former All Progressives Congress, APC, (Northwest), Dr. Lukman Salihu Mohammed, has been appointed to head the secretariat of a newly formed anti-Tinubu coalition. The coalition also adopted the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as its official platform, signalling a strategic political realignment involving defectors from the APC.

4. The naira on Wednesday appreciated to N1, 615 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,620 per dollar on Tuesday. Similarly, the Naira appreciated to N1,583 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM).

5. The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has revealed that some insurgents involved in the recent resurgence of Boko Haram attacks in parts of Nigeria are not Nigerian nationals. He explained that these militants carry out attacks in Nigeria and then retreat to neighboring countries to regroup before launching further assaults, taking advantage of Nigeria’s porous borders.

6. The Benue State Caucus of the All Progressives Congress in the National Assembly on Wednesday endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election. Speaking at a press conference on behalf of the group, Senator Titus Zam (Benue North-West) said the decision was based on the president’s “transformative leadership”.

7. A final audit of the results of the 379,775 candidates who say the rescheduled 2025 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination is being conducted ahead of the final release to the public on Thursday. The audit team includes officials from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Civil Societies Organisations, academics and other independent observers.

8. Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reaffirmed his commitment to the Peoples Democratic Party, saying he has no intention of leaving the party despite recent defections and internal challenges. Speaking on Wednesday during the official inauguration of the newly elected PDP South West zonal executive members at the party’s zonal secretariat, Soji Adagunodo House, Old Ife Road, Ibadan, Makinde declared that the PDP would remain aligned with the masses and their aspirations.

9. The Gombe State Police Command on Wednesday confirmed the arrest of 25 suspects in connection with the violent attack on the Divisional Police Officer of Kwadon Division, CSP Adamu Alhaji-Idi. The officer was reportedly assaulted by a group of suspected miscreants popularly known as Kalare on Tuesday, May 20, while carrying out his lawful duties in Kwadon town.

10. The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), says they have intensified moves to recover assets outside Africa that are perceived to be proceeds of crime. Chairman of ICPC, Dr Musa Aliyu, said this in Abuja, at a one-day stakeholders engagement on the assessment of Nigeria’s asset recovery regime.
