A Nigerian Police inspector, Okolie Amechi, has been shot dead by his 10-year-old son in Anambra State.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said the incident occurred on the evening of Sunday, June 15, 202,5, in the police officer’s residence in Awka, Anambra State capital.

He said the incident was due to an accidental discharge by Inspector Amechi’s 10-year-old son.

Narrating how the incident occurred in a statement on Monday, Ikenga said, “The (Inspector Amechi’s) son, unaware of the state of the AK 47 rifle assigned to the Inspector, pulled the trigger and struck the Inspector on the back and his second child on the hand.

“Regrettably, Inspector Amechi was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty at the hospital, while the second victim was said to be responding to treatment.”

The PPRO said the AK47 rifle has been recovered, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in the morgue.

The Command, while wishing the second victim a quick recovery, condoles with the family and friends of the late Inspector”, SP Ikenga stated further.

He also stated that the state police command regretted the tragic incident.
