A few things to know about Tunji Disu, the newly appointed acting IGP, have emerged.
NewsRain Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu has appointed Tunji Disu as the acting Inspector General of Police.
Disu was appointed after Kayode Egbetokun resigned as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
“In view of the current security challenges confronting the nation, and acting in accordance with extant laws and legal guidance, President Tinubu has approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu to serve as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect,” presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, said in a statement on Tuesday evening.

“In compliance with the provisions of the Police Act 2020, President Tinubu will convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council shortly to formally consider the appointment of AIG Disu as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be transmitted to the Senate for confirmation,” he said.
Below are a few things to know about the acting IGP Tunji Disu:
- Disu was appointed Acting IGP by President Bola Tinubu on February 24, 2026, replacing the former, Kayode Egbetokun
- He was born on April 13, 1966, and hails from Lagos Island, Lagos Stat,e and would have retired from the police force on 13 April, 2026.
- Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992.
- He has over three decades of policing experience.
- Disu once served as Commissioner of Police, FCT Abuja.
- He also served as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State.
- He commanded the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) for six years where he rebranded RRS officers as “The Good Guys.”
- He promoted community-based policing in Lagos and introduced hotspot and crime-mapping strategies.
- Under him, RRS vehicles were visibly positioned for crime deterrence as his officers assisted accident victims and stranded motorists.
- Under him, RRS ambulances were deployed to assist protesters during EndSARS in 2020.
- His team once transported a woman in labour during COVID-19 lockdown.
- He served as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Operations, Force HQ.
- He headed the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), succeeding Abba Kyari as IRT commander.
- Tunji led operations against high-profile criminal syndicates.
- He was at a time 2IC at the State CID in Rivers
- Disu also served as DPO in Ogun, Ondo and Rivers States.
- He was Officer-in-Charge of SARS in multiple states.
- He led Nigeria’s first-ever Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan in 2005.
- Disu served in the African Union Mission in Sudan (Darfur) and was Acting Chief of Staff during the Sudan mission.
- He trained in Small Arms Smuggling in Botswana.
- Disu attended Internet Fraud training at Cambridge University, UK and also completed Strategic Leadership training in Jos.
- He studied Forensic Investigation and Criminal Intelligence at UNILAG.
- He holds a degree in English Education from LASU.
- He earned a postgraduate diploma in International Relations.
- He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University.
- He also holds a second Master’s degree in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology.
- Disu holds a UK certificate in Personal Protection.
- He is a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
- He belongs to the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations.
- Disu is affiliated with global forensic and investigative bodies.
- He is a third dan black belt in Judo.
- He won silver at the 33rd U.S. Open Judo Championship by competing in the under-100kg veteran category.
- He won gold at the 1990 National Sports Festival.
- He won two gold medals at Nigerian Police Games.
- He won gold at the Nigerian Police Veteran Championship (2021).
- He is formerly the Chairman of Lagos State Judo Association and currently the patron of the Nigerian Police Judo Association
- Under his leadership, RRS won Best Anti-Crime Squad in West Africa.
- He was named Most Outstanding Anti-Crime Police Chief in 2019.
- He now leads the Nigeria Police Force at a critical security crossroads.
