A viral video of male journalist sitting on the lap of Oyo APC govornorship candidate Senator Sharafadeen Alli has emerged.

 

 

NewsRain Nigeria reports that a video circulating on social media has sparked mixed reactions after Oyo State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate Senator Sharafadeen Alli was seen in a close interaction with a male journalist during an interview.

The clip, seen on social media, shows the politician seated while the journalist appeared to sit on his lap as the interview proceeded.

 

The footage has since generated debate online, with supporters and critics offering differing interpretations of the interaction.

 

Meanwhile, in an update, the campaign organisation of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has rejected attempts to portray a video showing him interacting with a student during an interview as sexual or inappropriate.

The campaign office, in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday and made available to journalists, described the interpretation of the footage as a deliberate effort to create a scandal around an otherwise ordinary interaction.

 

However, Alli’s campaign said the student and others seen in the video are students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan, who had visited the politician to seek support for one of their programmes and conduct an interview with him.

 

According to the campaign, the number of people at the venue exceeded the available seating capacity when the students arrived, leaving some attendees without chairs.

 

It said Alli, in what it described as a spontaneous and fatherly gesture, invited one of the students to sit on his lap so that the interview could continue.

 

The campaign insisted that the interaction had no sexual or suggestive undertone and accused some online platforms of deliberately assigning an inappropriate meaning to the footage.

“Unfortunately, political desperation has descended to this level, where an ordinary interaction between a fatherly political leader and students who came to seek support for their programme is deliberately twisted into something sordid,” the campaign said.

 

It argued that political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine responsible journalism or lead to the spread of misleading interpretations of events.

 

The campaign further said Alli had consistently maintained an open relationship with young people, students and other groups across Oyo State.

It also challenged those circulating the footage to consider the full context of the interaction instead of using a brief segment to advance what it described as a misleading narrative.

 

“Those who know Senator Sharafadeen Alli understand his disposition towards young people and his fatherly relationship with them. There is no basis whatsoever for the offensive insinuations being attached to this video,” it stated.

 

The campaign also appealed to media organisations and social media users to exercise caution when reporting or sharing material capable of damaging an individual’s reputation, particularly where political considerations may influence the interpretation of events.

 

It urged the public to reject what it called “cheap political blackmail”, arguing that the 2027 Oyo State governorship contest should be centred on policies, competence, development and the welfare of residents.

 

The campaign said Alli remained focused on his engagement with voters across the state and would not be distracted by what it described as attempts to manufacture controversy around his candidacy.
