FG has been urged to make use of technology to curb the social media menace in the country.
News Rain Nigeria reports that the  House of Representatives Committee on Information has asked the Federal government to with immediate effect make use of technology to curb the social media menace.
News Rain Nigeria gathered that the House of Representatives members on Tuesday, today 27th, October 2020, during the 2021 budget defense session, Lai Mohammed, Information and Culture Minister, told the House Committee on Information that the biggest problem that was confronting the country presently, was fake news through the social media.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed lamented over the havoc that fake news through social media had done to the Country, he noted that the menace has become a big epidemic plaguing the country.
Lai Mohammed warned that Nigeria was sitting on a time bomb following the negative impacts of social media, as he noted that the government had done so much in an attempt to control the use of social media negatively in the country, He noted that the efforts have met on many occasions with stiff resistance by the citizens.
Mohammed maintained that social media has been controlled elsewhere in the world by their government, but noted that Nigeria’s government lacked the requisite technology to curb this menace.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed makes use of the Chinese government who he said has been able to control social media in China, thereby preventing fake news.
Lai Mohammed made reference to the recent havoc done by social media, on the EndSARS protest, which has resulted in wanton destruction of properties and loss of lives.
 In his reaction to the Minister, Honorable Odebunmi Segun, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, told the minister, ” go and think on how to secure good technology to curtail fake news in Nigeria.”
Also in his reaction to the development, Hon. Ogene Egoh maintained that social media has done more good than harm”, he said, adding that community crisis, crimes, and other nefarious activities today were brought to the attention of government and security agencies via social media.
Hon. Ogene Egoh representing the Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency of  Lagos State said the desire of the minister should be sounded with caution.
Hon. Egoh maintained that China is a communist country, while Nigeria is a Democratic nation.
Egoh said, “in your desire to curb social media, you should not overdo. We are a democracy. China you cited is a communist country.
