Comrade Ukpong also raised complaints about lack of the non-mentorship on teaching norms and ethos from the experienced teachers to younger ones, as few experienced hands are overwhelmed with workloads.
Comrade Ukpong, while speaking on the theme: “Leading in Crisis, Reimagining the Future” said: ”I appealed to the state government to employ more qualified teachers to fill the void in the state”.
Ukpong pleaded for improved funding of the education sector in the state as no significant improvement has been noted in the funding of the sector within the past year.
Comrade Ukpong however, used the occasion to commend the State Government, over the payment of examination fees of students of the final year in Secondary School.
He said: “We also want to thank the state government for the bill for an act to regularise and legislate Free Education and payment of Examination fees for final year students in our Secondary schools and distribution of body temperature detecting devices, facemasks, buckets and N20,000 to each school for the development of Covid-19 holding bays in schools”. Ukpong  said
“We have also witnessed during the year; the dearth of attention on retired and families of teachers who died in active service, delays in payment of monthly pensions to veterans of the teaching profession, lack of gratuity, thereby increasing the fears in the hearts of serving teachers”. he said
Comrade Ukpong also raised concerns on over-bloated sources of inspection, monitoring, and supervision by agents of the government, with attendant unfriendliness and fault -findings “on the few, overloaded teachers left in the system, thereby creating confusion”.
He said: “the teachers also reminded government on the pending issues of 7.5percent contributory pension refunds, arrears, and present Leave Grants and the need for Teachers in the state to be made to feel a sense of belonging, to boost their morale to serve the state better”.
