Electricity Company Denies Plan To Increase Electricity Tariff

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has denied the planned tariff increase that was supposed to be implemented from July 1, 2023.

Recall that on Sunday, the DisCo released a statement indicating that, according to the MYTO 2022 guidelines, the previously set exchange rate of N441/$1 might be revised to approximately N750/$1.

This revision was expected to have an impact on the tariffs associated with electricity consumption.

For customers in bands B and C, with supply hours ranging from 12 to 16 per day, the new base tariff was projected to be N100 per kWh.

Bands A, with 20 hours and above, and B, with 16 to 20 hours, would experience comparatively higher tariffs.

However, in a tweet on Monday, the DisCo announced that customers should disregard the previous communication, stating that no approval for such an increase had been received.

The tweet read: “Dear Esteemed Customers, Please disregard the communication circulating in the media regarding the review of electricity tariffs. Be informed that no approval for such increments has been received. We regret any inconvenience.”

Meanwhile, the President of the Nigeria Consumer Protection Network, Kunle Olubiyo, stressed the need for the Federal Government to divest its 40% stake in the Power Sector, thereby breaking the monopoly of the 11 Electricity Distribution Companies.
