1. The Federal Government on Sunday urged university lecturers to embrace constructive consultation instead of confrontation over the issues relating to their declared dispute with the authorities. It said having agreed to most of the terms of the lecturers’ requests, there was no need for their union to abandon talks and declare a two-week warning strike. It vowed to implement ‘no work, no pay’ on the lecturers.

2. Minister of Works, David Umahi, has urged Nigerians, especially those from the Southeast, to support President Bola Tinubu for a second term, saying 2027 is not the region’s turn to produce the president. Speaking in Abuja during an interview with NAN, Umahi said the Southeast must show patience and support continuity for fairness and stability.

3. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday evening arrived in Rome, Italy, ahead of the Aqaba Process Heads of State and Government Meeting, which will focus on tackling the growing security crisis in West Africa. The Presidential aircraft touched down at the Rome Fiumicino International Airport at about 7:20 pm where the President was received by senior Italian officials, members of the Nigerian diplomatic corps, and top aides.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, MAKIA, have arrested a 52-year-old businessman, Ejiofor Godwin Emeka, who excreted 127 wraps of cocaine after days under observation. NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said Ejiofor, who runs boutiques in Lagos and Onitsha, was intercepted on arrival from Bangkok, Thailand, via Ethiopian Airlines.

5. No fewer than nine people have been confirmed dead, eight of them gruesomely slaughtered, while six others remain missing following a coordinated armed attack on Nindama village in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. Security agencies have intensified efforts to rescue the missing persons and track down the perpetrators.

6. Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s latest use of the presidential pardon, describing it as a reckless act that undermines justice and accountability. In a statement posted on his X handle, yesterday, Atiku said the presidential prerogative of mercy is meant to balance justice with compassion, not to trivialise criminality.

7. The naira extended its gains at the official market last week as it gained 0.72 per cent or N10.5 to close at 1,455.17/$, the strongest it had been since December 2024, data from the Central Bank of Nigeria has revealed. Analysts, according to reports, disclosed that the performance of the domestic currency was driven by robust foreign exchange inflows from portfolio investors and remittances.

8. Dangote Cement has officially launched its operations in Attingué, some 30 kilometres from Abidjan, Ivory Coast. According to a statement by the group on Sunday, the announcement was made on Wednesday by the Managing Director of Dangote Cement, Ivory Coast, Serge Gbotta, at the Novotel Abidjan-Marcory.

9. A Nigerian man identified simply as Chimezie has been shot dead by gunmen at a bar in the Durban area of South Africa. It was gathered that the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday while the victim, who worked as a bartender, was attending to customers.

10. A 30-year-old Nigerian man, Nsude Chimaobi, has been arrested alongside eight other drug smugglers by Mumbai’s Anti-Narcotics Cell, with 523 grams of cocaine worth N5.23 crore recovered in Santacruz, India. This was learnt from a report by The Free Press Journal, an Indian news agency, on Sunday.
