Former President’s Widow Dies At 89 After A Prolonged Illness

Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of Nigeria’s former President, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, has passed away at the age of 89.

Family sources confirmed that she died around 3:00 p.m. on Monday after a prolonged illness.

Her death was announced by the late President’s eldest son and District Head of Shagari, Capt. Bala Shagari (rtd), in a statement issued in Sokoto.

Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Hajiya Sutura Shehu Shagari, the last surviving wife of the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, GCFR, Turakin Sokoto,” the statement read in part.

Hajiya Sutura passed away today at approximately 3:00 p.m. at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.

“She was an embodiment of grace, humility, and quiet strength; a devoted mother, grandmother, and matriarch who lived a life defined by dignity and compassion.

“Her loss is deeply felt by the Shagari family and all who knew her. Further details and funeral arrangements will be announced in due course. May her gentle soul rest in eternal peace.”

Mourning the death on his Facebook page, one of the late president’s grandsons, Bello Bala Shagari, wrote: “We lost our matriarch, the only surviving wife of our late grandfather, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari. May Allah reunite them in Jannah.”
