Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has started a free bus service called “Xmas Free Transport Service.”
The aim is to help people cope with the economic hardship and make it easier for residents and visitors to move around during the busy festive season.
The launch took place on Monday in Calabar. The governor was represented by his deputy, Peter Odey, who said the government normally provides free bus services during major celebrations such as Easter.
He explained that the idea is to reduce transport costs and bring people together.
He added that the project aligns with the governor’s “People First” agenda and supports this year’s Carnival Calabar theme, “Traces of Time.”
The free buses will run throughout the Calabar Festival period. They will cover major streets in Calabar Municipality and extend to nearby towns.
Some of the routes include:
- Watt Market to Scanobo
- Watt Market to Atimbo
There will also be longer routes linking Calabar to towns such as Ugep, Ikom, Abi, Obudu, and Ogoja.
In addition, a free ferry service will operate between Calabar and Creek Town in Odukpani.
The governor encouraged everyone residents and visitors to use the free transport and continue supporting his administration as well as the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
