Egypt Defeats Super Eagles In Pre-AFCON Friendly Match

Egypt has defeated Nigeria Super Eagles with a 2–1 win in a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly in Cairo on Tuesday, with Mostafa Mohamed’s second-half strike sealing the result.

The hosts went ahead just before the half-hour mark when Mahmoud Saber tapped in at the back post after being set up by Zizo, who caused persistent problems for the Super Eagles down the right flank.

Nigeria struggled to find an attacking rhythm but nearly levelled when Paul Onuachu’s long ball was almost headed into his own net by Yasser Ibrahim, forcing a sharp save from goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.

The equaliser came shortly after Zaidu Sanusi’s free kick from the left was fumbled by El Shenawy at his near post, allowing defender Chidozie Awaziem to react quickest and head in from close range.

Egypt regained control after the break and restored their lead through Mostafa Mohamed, who finished clinically from inside the area following another incisive move involving Zizo.

Nigeria was unable to find a response as Egypt saw out the match comfortably to cap an encouraging final tune-up ahead of the tournament.

The Super Eagles will begin their AFCON 2025 campaign on Tuesday, 23 December, against Tanzania at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.

They will also face Tunisia on 27 December and Uganda on 30 December in what is seen as a tricky Group C.

For Egypt, seven-time champions and winners of the tournament three times in a row between 2006 and 2010, the friendly offered encouragement as they prepare for Group B clashes against South Africa, Angola, and Zimbabwe.
