1. The Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday announced that the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections will be conducted on the 20th of February, 2027, in accordance with the provisions of the 2022 Electoral Act. Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Joash Amupitan, who disclosed at a news conference in Abuja, said the Governorship and State Assembly elections are scheduled to hold on the 6th of March 2027 across the country.
2. Edo State Police Command said it arrested 87 suspected kidnappers across the state from January 1st till date. It said it nabbed some kidnappers who carried dane guns to pose as hunters. Edo Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, who spoke at a press briefing in Benin City, said the arrest was made with the aid of helicopters, drone technology, gallant and dedicated police operatives.

Bandits have killed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Rimi Local Government Area of Katsina State, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, during an operation against suspected cattle rustlers, the state government has said. The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs confirmed that three suspected rustlers were neutralised in the joint operation involving security operatives and community members.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) to produce before it, on February 18, an Islamic cleric, Sheikh Sani Abdulkadir Zaria, accused of coup plot against President Bola Tinubu’s government. Justice Peter Lifu on Friday, while making the order, said all authorities, were subordinated under the civil authority “as we are in a civilian rule”.
5. Six people have died from Lassa Fever in Edo State, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, confirmed late Friday. Addressing a press conference in Benin City, Oshiomhole revealed that the state has recorded 28 confirmed cases of the disease.

A former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has confirmed that he will honour an invitation from the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on Wednesday, February 18, 2026. El-Rufai disclosed this in a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, a day after what he described as an attempted arrest at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
7. A man identified as Nwalozie Chiwendu has allegedly killed his brother, Chidiebere Isaiah, in Ofeh community, Omuma Local Government Area of Rivers State. It was gathered that the incident occurred at about 4pm on Thursday after the suspect accused his elder brother of witchcraft and blocking his success.

The All Progressives Congress, APC, Secretary of the Federal Capital Territory Council Election Campaign Council and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has declared that the APC will deploy intensive grassroots mobilisation, including door-to-door engagement and youth-driven strategies, to reclaim the area councils in Abuja. Kalu made the remarks while inaugurating the APC FCT Council Election Campaign Council in Abuja on Friday.

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai has alleged that the administration of President Bola Tinubu may be linked to efforts pushing for United States sanctions against a former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso. El-Rufai made the allegation on Friday during on Arise Television, against the backdrop of a proposed US congressional bill seeking visa restrictions and asset freezes against individuals accused of serious violations of religious freedom.

The African Democratic Congress has condemned an alleged attempt by security operatives to arrest former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, upon his arrival from Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday.
