Zamfara Governor, Matawalle Loses Re-Election, As Dauda Lawal Emerge Winner

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has announced Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as the governor-elect of Zamfara State, northern Nigeria.
PDP Lawal was announced as the winner in Gusau, the state capital, in the early hours of Tuesday, March 21, 2023.
According to INEC, he polled a total of 377,726 votes to defeat Bello Matawalle of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who scored 311,976.

The declaration came amidst some mild drama over the presentation of the results for the Maradun Local Government Area, LGA.
Recall that the Collation officer for Maradun Local Government Area, LGA, Ahmed Kainuwa, was said to have been abducted on Monday, March 20, 2023.
However, Kainuwa later resurfaced at the state collation centre at the INEC headquarters in Gusau.
Note that Matawalle is the first of 11 governors in the 2023 poll to fail in getting second term in office.
Nine governors have been re-elected while the election in Adamawa State between incumbent Ahmadu Fintiri and APC’s Aisha Binani has been declared inconclusive.
