Ramadan: Sultan Asks Muslims To Look For New Moon On Friday

Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has urged Muslims across the country to begin searching for the 2025 (1446 AH) Ramadan moon on Friday, February 28.
In a statement issued on Thursday by NSCIA Secretary-General, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the council emphasized the significance of the moon sighting in determining the start of Ramadan.
“Consequent upon the advice of the National Moon Sighting Committee (NMSC), the President-General enjoins the Nigerian Muslim Ummah to search for the crescent of Ramadan 1446 AH immediately after sunset on Friday, 28th February 2025 which is equivalent to 29th Sha’aban 1446 AH,” the statement read.
The Sultan noted that if the crescent is sighted by credible witnesses that evening, Ramadan will officially commence on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Otherwise, the fasting period will begin automatically on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
The council prayed for all Muslims to witness and maximize the blessings of the holy month. It also encouraged well-off individuals to support the less privileged, especially in light of ongoing economic challenges.
“The council, once again, admonishes traders to neither hoard food products nor unduly hike the prices of consumer goods during the period of the fast.
“The council hereby enjoins Muslims all over the country to be on the lookout for the Ramadan crescent on the night of Friday, 28th of February 2025, and await the official announcement by the President-General of NSCIA, on the commencement of the 1446 AH Ramadan fast,” the statement added.
