Popular Islamic Singer Is Dead
Popular Islamic singer, Alhaja Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso is dead.
She was pronounced dead in the early hours of Tuesday.
The Senior Special Assistant on New Media to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, Jubril Gawat, who is a relative of the deceased confirmed her death.
Gawat tweeted: “Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.” Q 2 V 156.”
Also, Sanwo-Olu’s aide, Gboyega Akosile said: ““Ina lillahi waina ilaehi rajiun” May the Almighty Allah, who is the giver and taker of life console the family of my dear brothers @Mr_JAGs @tfk_gawat on the demise of our beloved sister, Rukayat.
“May Aljannah Firdaus be her permanent home. May Allah grant you the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
Her remains will be interred later today according to Islamic tenets and rites.
The deceased is the daughter of popular broadcaster and Islamic presenter, Alhaji Rasaq Aremu Gawat who mysteriously disappeared with no details of his whereabouts known until now.
In a 2017 interview, she disclosed that her father’s disappearance was her source of motivation.
The TV presenter was said to have left his office on July 6, 2012, and nothing has been heard since then.
In a 2019 interview, she said she would rather quit music rather than go secular.
Though born in Lagos Island, the late artiste who hailed from Igbaja, Kwara State is married to Alhaji Shakiri Oyefeso.
Gawat delved into the Islamic music scene in 2015.
She rose to fame after releasing songs about the mysterious disappearance of her father ‘Aye Le’.
Gawat continued to enjoy stardom in the Islamic music industry with several hit projects and awards.
In 2016, the singer won City People Magazine’s ‘Best Female Islamic Musician’ award.
She also clinched the ‘Best Islamic Artiste’ category at the 2017 City People Music Award.
