Ibadan Opposition Summit

A group has accused Governor Makinde of wasting N2bn to fund the Ibadan opposition summit as it seeks EFCC and ICPC probe.

NewsRain Nigeria reports that a group, the Save Oyo Movement (SOM), has accused the State governor, Seyi Makinde, of wasting another N2billion on the Opposition Parties Summit held in Ibadan on Saturday.

The group alleged that Governor Makinde has lavished over N10 billion from the N30 billion received from the Federal Government for victims of the January 2024 Ibadan explosion tragedy, on his bid to be the vice presidential candidate of any political party in the 2027 elections.

In a release on Sunday, signed by its Coordinator, Comrade Akeem Oladiti, SOM called for investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offences Commission (ICPC) into the spending.

The group, which disclosed that it will petition the EFCC and ICPC, wondered how a governor will collect N30billion lifeline for explosion victims since 2024, and keep the money, only to be allegedly spending it on his vice presidential ambition.

It is alleged that over N5 billion was spent on the November 15 and 16, 2025, failed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Convention held in Ibadan, while another N1.5 billion was spent on the failed obas’ coronation ceremony, which three Ibadan High Chiefs scheduled for coronation refused to attend.

“The main target of his coronation was Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who is being touted as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, forgetting that being a traditional ruler does not prevent anyone from aspiring to public office.

“Now, mindful of his dwindling political fortune, Governor Makinde hurriedly organised the political summit held in Ibadan yesterday, just to sell his ambition to be vice presidential candidate, and on it, over N2 billion Oyo State money was spent.

“Even though we are not against the governor, or anyone having political ambition and pursuing it, but it must not be at the expense of the welfare of the people of Oyo State, and on this one, we will do all that we can to make Governor Makinde account for his wasteful spending of the State funds,” the group stated.
