JAMB to extend registration for direct entry

JAMB Considers Extending Direct Entry Registration Deadline

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is reportedly considering extending the registration period for candidates seeking direct entry admission to universities across Nigeria. The initial deadline for registration was set for Saturday, May 13. However, due to the consistent overcrowding and chaos witnessed at the Lagos office of the examination body over the past week, JAMB has decided to reevaluate the situation and potentially extend the deadline.

An anonymous JAMB official confirmed this new development to PREMIUM TIMES on Saturday evening. The official stated that the management of the examination body had recently discussed the challenges faced at various JAMB offices, particularly in Lagos. As a result, they have decided to consider extending the registration deadline to ensure that all qualified and willing applicants have the opportunity to complete the registration process.

NANS Demands JAMB Registrar’s Resignation Over Direct Entry Registration Challenges

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the resignation of Prof Ishaq Olarewaju Oloyede, the registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), following reports of registration difficulties for students seeking Direct Entry admission.

In a viral video that surfaced on Sunday, students were seen sleeping outside the JAMB Zonal Headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos, as they struggled to complete their Direct Entry registration. According to the students, they had been sleeping outside the JAMB office for days due to difficulties in registering.

In response to the situation, a NANS official visited the students on Friday and described their plight as “pitiable young Nigerian learners struggling to make it and go to schools.” The official also labeled Oloyede a failure and called for his immediate resignation.

The call for Oloyede’s resignation highlights the frustration experienced by Nigerian students trying to gain access to higher education and the need for improved processes and systems to ease their registration processes.

I Scored Low in JAMB, What Can I Do Next?

if you received a low UTME score, there are still options available to you. Please read on for the recommended steps to take to secure admission.

1. Don’t Panic About the Lower JAMB Score

Don’t be alarmed by a low JAMB score. Despite the obvious concern, many students can still gain admission with lower scores if they follow some advice.

So, how can this be achieved? I will reveal the answer shortly.

Scoring high in JAMB is essential, but it’s not a guarantee for admission. Surprisingly, some students with scores above 250 couldn’t secure admission, while others with scores of 150 or less gained admission into their desired schools.

For reference, in the 2020 admission for example, out of the 4,948 applicants who scored 300 and above, only 3,492 gained admission into higher institutions, leaving out a total of 1,456 applicants stranded.

In the same year, about 52,323 candidates scored between 250 and 299 in the same examination, out of which 22,580 candidates were also not admitted.

In the same vein, some 193,661 candidates out of 347,469 who scored between 200 and 249 were not offered admission.

Why?

You will see that before you leave this page.

This misfortune repeats itself every year because of some factors such as:

  1. applicants’ rigidity about a specific course i.e. when a candidate who wants a particular course refuses to settle for anything else;
  2. wrong O’level subject combination;
  3. low post-UTME screening score;
  4. UTME-combination deficiency,
  5. duplication of application,
  6. absence from post-UTME screening,
  7. mismatch of catchment institutions,
  8. and non-acceptance of the offer.
  9. failure to upload their O’level with five credits in the required subjects.

To this end, if you can do all the above right, even with your lower score, you’ll be on campus when your friends and enemies, who scored higher, may remain home till next year.

2. Do the Change of Institutions/Courses But Don’t Rush at That

To reduce stress after receiving a low score on the JAMB exam, consider using the JAMB change of institution and/or courses option. This allows you to apply to schools that accept lower scores rather than those with higher score requirements. However, it is important to note that a lower score requirement does not make a course or institution inferior. In fact, a less competitive course may be a better fit for your career goals and academic pursuits.

When deciding whether to make changes, it is important to wait and see how things develop after the release of UTME results. Most schools will not begin admission immediately, so take the time to research their post UTME/screening requirements from the previous year to see what they accepted. This can help you decide whether to change institutions, courses, or both.

It is important to note that changing institutions or courses is a continual exercise throughout the admission year, which does not end until another JAMB form is released. Therefore, it is not necessary to rush into making changes. Taking the time to make an informed decision can save you money in the long run, as you may not need to make multiple changes before the admission year ends.

3. Consider Schools Accepting Lower Scores

If you received a lower score than expected on the UTME exam, you may consider changing to institutions that accept lower scores. However, it is important not to rely solely on the advice of family and friends. Wait for the institutions to announce the sale of their admission forms and research their previous year’s cut-off marks before making a decision.

Lower scores are better suited for polytechnics and colleges of education, as they tend to have less competition than universities. If your score falls between 100 to 179, consider changing to a polytechnic or college of education and focusing your efforts on that institution. For more information on institutions that accept these scores, see “21+ Schools that Accept 100+ for Admissions.”

4. Consider Admissions Without JAMB UTME

Lucky you, if you don’t want to use JAMB UTME to gain admission. Yes, you can gain admission without JAMB.

There are universities offering admissions for degree programmes without UTME/DE, so also a few polytechnics won’t need JAMB UTME for their ND programmes.

Among such programmes are distant learning, regular part-time, and daily or direct part-time.

Luckily, you can cross to HND full-time after completing your ND part-time or daily part-time. This will help you to serve at NYSC.

You can also run a university daily part-time programme such as for the Federal University of Oye Ekiti which also promises NYSC.

A few distance learning programme such as that of the University of Ibadan (UIDLC), and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAUDLC) also assures you of serving at NYSC if you’re within the 30 years of age on graduation and/or mobilization.

Other ways to gain admission if you don’t care for the JAMB score this year include:

  1. schools of nursing that are not asking for JAMB
  2. pre-degree programmes which will only need next year’s JAMB to be at 100 level, by next year
  3. A’level programmes such as UI Cambridge, and other schools IJMB, JUPEB, etc will help you skip JAMB next year and cross to the 200 level with Direct entry admission
  4. National Open University except that of now is yet to be going for NYSC.

10 Best Art Courses To Study For Quick Employment In Nigeria

considering the fact that Nigeria is a country with a high rate of unemployment, choosing a good course increases your chances of avoiding a jobless future. Hence putting Employment situation in the country into consideration is very paramount when choosing a course of study.

Previously, we share a list of over 90 art courses students can apply for at any universities in Nigeria.

10 best art courses to study For Quick Employment In Nigeria in Nigeria

1. Fine & Applied Art

After graduating from the Department of Fine & Applied Art, you can become a costume designer, fashion designer, interior decorator, painter, etc., depending on what you majored in.

Aside from the job opportunities related to this course, if you have a strong passion for art, then becoming a pro at it will definitely be a thing of profound beauty.

2. International Relations / Foreign Languages

International relations / Foreign languages are hugely underrated courses. Both courses are separate; however, since I was torn in between which one to choose, I decided to include both of them.

Studying International relations or foreign languages like mandarin (Chinese), Spanish, German, Russian and French can really open doors of employment for you at the embassies/consulates.

And the good thing is, there’s no much competition with respect to gaining admission and job openings for those courses.

Those are the 10 art courses we believe are the best in Nigerian universities. However, this doesn’t mean other courses aren’t good enough.

As we all know, Nigeria is a country where people excel in fields they didn’t study at the university. For instance, Wizkid and Davido didn’t study music in the university; however, they’ve been doing extremely well in the Nigerian music industry.

In other words, your ability to develop yourself personally will go a long way in ensuring you have a decent job or comfortable life in the future

3. Mass Communication

This is definitely one of the best art courses to study in Nigerian Universities. Mass communication refers to imparting and exchanging information on a large scale, and to a wide range of people efficiently and speedily.

Students who graduate with a degree in Mass Communication can pursue a career in journalism, broadcasting, digital communication, or media management and sales.

Above all, students who graduate with a degree in mass communication will ultimately develop mass media journalistic and technology skills, research and communication skills. Those skills can come in handy even if you end up self-employed.

4. Law

Many would argue that Law is by far the best art course offered in Nigerian universities. It is also one of the most demanding courses in Nigeria.

Notwithstanding, thousands of Nigerians apply every year for an opportunity to study law.

As the case may be, job opportunities for lawyers are in abundance. I guess this explains why the course gets a large number of applicants every year.

Best universities to Study Law in Nigeria

  1. University of Benin (UNIBEN)
  2. University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  3. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN)
  4. University of Ibadan (UI)
  5. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (OAU)
  6. University of Port-Harcourt (UNIPORT)
  7. Bauchi State University, Gadau

5. Linguistics

Linguistics is also one of the best art courses in Nigeria universities. The goal of linguistics as a course is the enrichment of knowledge about the nature, grammar, and history of human language. Linguistics is a theoretical and applied discipline, akin to philosophy, anthropology, and cognitive psychology. The core areas of linguistic are phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics.

Been a professional art course, graduates of Linguistics have gone on to a wide variety of successful careers, from relatively vocational subjects such as speech therapy or English language teaching to generic jobs such as management or public relations.

What to Do When your JAMB Exam Score is Low

This is a guide for what to do when your JAMB score is below 180. I will now list what to do when you scored below 150 below in JAMB.

(1) Check for the list of universities that accept low JAMB score

The first step is to check the previous JAMB cut-off mark for each University and that will give you a clue to Universities and Polytechnics that accept low JAMB score.

(2) Go for a change of course/institution

My friend that was offered admission in 2002 makes use of the opportunity provided by JAMB which is a change of course/institution. He changed from UNIPORT to LAUTECH once he discovered that LAUTECH accepts below 190 for some courses. Change of course/institution is a saving grace once you have discovered that your JAMB score is below the cut-off mark of your school. It is a wise decision to make to save your score. Although you may need to opt for course/institution that you don’t really like. For example, someone that score 190 and wanted to study medicine may have to change his or her course to biology in a university that accept below 180 in JAMB. This can even make you change to a polytechnic against the university you chose initially.

(3) Prepare well for post-UTME

This only comes to play when you have met the cut-off mark. Meeting the cut-off mark doesn’t equate to offer of admission, you have to have a good Post UTME score to make your chance brighter. Many institutions use JAMB score + post-UTME score + O’ level result to determine who they offer admission. So you must start preparing now.

Universities Accepting 150 to180 Cut-Off Mark for Nursing

After the release of UTME results, the majority of the conversations I had with students were centered around the challenge of obtaining a high score for Nursing. Specifically, students who had scored between 150 and 180 were inquiring about the feasibility of studying Nursing Science with their results.

This brings up an important question: Is it possible to gain admission into a university offering Nursing with a score ranging from 150 to 180, or any score in between? Alternatively, should you search for less competitive universities that accept lower JAMB scores, or stick with your current university that typically requires a score of 200 or above?

In this post, we will explore the likelihood of gaining admission into a Nursing program with a lower JAMB score and identify institutions that may accept scores below 200.

Admission into Nursing Programs in Some Nigerian Universities Requires 200 and Above

It is important to note that virtually all Nigerian universities offering Nursing programs require a minimum JAMB score of 200. This requirement is clearly stated in their post-UTME and screening advertisements.

If you are seeking admission into universities such as OAU, UNILAG, UNILORIN, UNIBEN, FUOYE, LASU, EKSU, and others known for their high cut-off marks, you may find it challenging to gain admission with a score below 200. Even with the help of a lecturer or other individuals, the Department of Nursing in these universities cannot admit students who fall below the required cut-off mark.

However, there are other universities that may accept scores below 200. In the next section of this post, we will explore some of these universities and the possibility of gaining admission into their Nursing programs with a lower JAMB score.

Private Universities in Nigeria That May Consider Lower JAMB Scores for Nursing Admission

Believe it or not, there are a few universities in Nigeria that may consider admission into their Nursing programs with lower JAMB scores ranging from 150 to 190. However, these universities are mostly privately owned.

It is crucial to note that private universities are known to have exorbitant tuition fees. Therefore, if you can afford to pay over a million naira or more in yearly tuition, you may consider enquiring about admission and special consideration from any private university offering Nursing programs.

In this post, we will highlight some of the private universities in Nigeria that may consider lower JAMB scores for admission into their Nursing programs.

Some Schools/Colleges of Nursing Accepting Scores Between 150-200

  1. Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital School of Nursing and its Wesley sibling require a score of 150 or above.
  2. Nigerian Army College of Nursing & Midwifery, Yaba takes 150 or above.
  3. Lagos State Teaching Hospital School of Nursing requires 150 or above.
  4. Oyo State College of Nursing & Midwifery Eleyele also requires 150 or above.

In the past, the Lagos State College of Nursing Igando has been known to require scores of 200 or above.

Basic Nursing/General Nursing Programs

For students who are interested in basic Nursing programs, there is no need to take the JAMB. These schools and colleges will only require SSCE results with a pass in English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Students will be required to obtain an entrance form, sit for an exam, and if they pass, proceed to an interview before being offered admission. Basic Nursing programs usually take three years to complete.

Conclusion

Admission into Nursing programs will continue to be competitive. If you are unable to gain admission into a university offering Nursing, there are other options available such as private universities or basic Nursing programs that do not require the JAMB.
