Supreme Court has affirmed Douye Diri as official Governor of Bayelsa State.

 

News Rain Nigeria reports that the Supreme Court has affirmed Mr. Douye Diri as the duly elected governor of Bayelsa State.

The Apex Court in its pronouncement on Wednesday 18th November 2020, with this development, the apex court has finally put an end to the legal battle over his eligibility as official Governor of Bayelsa State.

The Apex Court in its unanimous decision made up, of a seven-man panel led by Justice Sylvester Ngwuta, thrown away the six appeals filed against Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

 

The Supreme Court, In a lead judgment, by Justice Ngwuta, based his verdict on the withdrawal of the six appeals by lawyers of the appellants.

The dismissed appeals were instituted by the Alliance for Democracy (AD), Advanced Nigeria Democratic Party (ANDP), and Labour Movement Party (LMP).

Supreme Court also dismissed the appeal by the Accord Party against Diri and Ewhrudjakpo was also dismissed.

News Rain Nigeria recall, that the Bayelsa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja had at different times also affirmed Diri as the duly elected governor of the state.

Mr. Douye Diri, who was a gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party came second in the 2019 governorship election in Bayelsa state, He has later declared the elected governor of the state following a Supreme Court judgment which had disqualified the All Progressives Congress’ candidate David Lyon who earlier emerged the winner of the election.

Governor Douye Diri’s emergence as Governor of the State has been challenged in Court by the AD, ANDP, LMP, and AP contestants, but all the Court struggle has been finalized today by the Supreme Court.
