The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Abiodun Ige Adams was full of joy and praise to God when friends, families, associates, and well-wishers joined him, his wife, Ayinba Mojisola Adams, and children on Sunday, May 08, 2022, to celebrate his 52nd birthday at the Harbour Point, Victoria Island in Lagos state.

The event had traditional rulers, state government officials, captains of industry, members of the human rights community, culture and tourism enthusiasts, scholars from academia, and members of Oodua People’s Congress Worldwide and Oodua Progressive Union, home and abroad in attendance.

The celebrant, Iba Gani Adams regaled in white royal traditional agbada with his scepter  never failed to acknowledge the presence of numerous guests with gestures and intermittently checkmated protocols to ensure dignitaries were accorded adequate courtesies.

In a goodwill message to Iba Gani Adams, Senator Ibikunle noted his giant strides in the struggle for the self-determination of Yoruba race. The former governor wrote, “Let me use this auspicious occasion of your birthday to acknowledge your contributions towards the unity, cohesion, and peaceful co-existence of Yorubaland. I wish you a happy birthday and pray that the Almighty Allah (SWT) will grant you many more years in good health”.

In like manner, traditional troupes and drama groups rendered eulogies and panegyrics of Aare Gani Adams as an ambassador and custodian of Yoruba culture.

The Grand Commander of Juju music, Chief Ebenezer Obey, His Son, and His Inter Reformers Band were on hand to dish out old and evergreen tunes to the delight of guests.

The high point of the event was the presentation of scholarships of Two Hundred Thousand Naira each to four undergraduates of university studying Linguistics and African Language in the southwest.

The scholarship scheme which was initiated by Aare Ona Kakanfo Foundation caters to indigent students with high CGPU in their academic pursuits.

The elated recipients of the 2022 scholarship were Master Ayodeji Akinsade of Adekunle Ajasin University; Miss Oluwafunmilola Anifowose of University of Ibadan; Master Olalekan Ayodeji of Olabisi Onabanjo University and Miss Nifemi Olusegun of Ekiti State University.

Responding to journalists at the event, the celebrant stated that he would have loved to do more if he had more resources.

He said: “I started last year with 200,000 Naira and I pray I have more resources to do more. However, I know that 200,000 is a stipend but I believe I could do 500,000 Naira and upwards but due to the economic situation of the country. If I consider my status, I wish I could do 10million Naira scholarship scheme but the inflow determines what we give out. So I may not want to promise anything I won’t be able to fulfill”.

The celebrant still speaking with journalists also touched on culture and how he was able to change the narratives as a chief promoter of Olokun Festival Foundation.

In the 90s, when you put beads on your hands, the people would say you are a cultist, When you talk of culture, some religious fanatics would say you glorify idolatry. By the grace of God, we were able to differentiate culture from religion through Olokun Festival.

We were able to encourage traditional rulers to celebrate culture in their domains. Yorubas have been able to distinguish this and would interest anyone to know that the representative of the General Overseer of RCCG is here with us.

We have been able to bridge that gap. This is how the Asian tigers have been able to excel in technology and innovation and also built an enviable economy that requires us here to emulate.

“In the past, when we invited people to our cultural events, they would be pessimistic that it would affect their belief system but today they have seen it differently.”

Also, when asked if he was fulfilled at 52 he said: “I’m highly delighted, I give glory
to God. I thank God for giving us the opportunity to celebrate today. We didn’t have the opportunity in 2020 when I turned 50 years due to Covid-19. Also in 2021, it was a low key so this year is like the celebration of 50 years
